About me

My name is Ângela França, I’m a Biologist and currently I’m a PhD student at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal.

My PhD thesis is focused on the Staphylococcus epidermidis biofims and their interactions with the host immune system.

I’m integrated in a team directed by Nuno Cerca at the Centre of Biological Engineering.


Quick Curriculum vitae

2009-2013 – PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the Centre of Biological Engineering, University of Minho.

January 2009-Febrary 2009Colaboration with National Cancer Institute – Nanotecnhology Characterization Laboratory, Frederick, Maryland, USA. Here, I studied the different  phagocytic routes involved in the uptake of gold nanoparticles by macrophages. This work was supervised by África González-Fernández  and Marina Dobrovolskaia.

2007-2008 – Master in Clinical Biology by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. The Master thesis was developded inn the Immunology laboratory at the University of Vigo,  Spain. Here, I studied the evaluation of the citotoxicity of gold nanoparticles in different human cell lines and, also, I have tested the consequences of different sterilization procedures  in the stability of gold nanoparticles. This work was supervised by África González-Fernández and Maria dos Anjos Clemente Pires.

2003-2007 – Degree in Biology by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro,Vila Real, Portugal.  I did my curricular training in the University of Porto (ICBAS) working in the celullar and molecular characterization of the immune system response to Streptococcus agalactiae infections promoted  by either the challenge of the bacterium or their excreted proteins. My training was developed under the supervision of Delfina Tavares, Dario Santos and Gabriela Trigo.

    • Hi,

      I really enjoy to work on nanotechnology/Immunology. Its a new field and so there’s a lot to explore and because of that, sometimes, could be a little bit easier to publish… But you have to decide, it depends on you. What is your background?
